China passing US as biggest oil importer

Posted on 05:51 by Unknown
China has achieved another world-beating status its leaders don't want: Biggest oil importer.

China passed the United States in September as the world's biggest net oil importer, driven by faster economic growth and strong auto sales, according to U.S. government data released this week.

Chinese oil consumption outstripped production by 6.3 million barrels per day, which indicates the country had to import that much to fill the gap, the Energy Information Administration said this week.

India to set up separate ASEAN mission; FTA by year-end: PM

Posted on 05:49 by Unknown
Eyeing greater cooperation with south east Asian countries on economic and security issues, India on Thursday announced a separate mission for ASEAN region to be set up in Jakarta with a full-time resident ambassador.

Addressing the 11th ASEAN-India summit here, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also said that India was ready to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with ASEAN on services and investment to boost their bilateral trade to USD 100 billion by 2015, from USD 76 billion last year.
"Today, we stand on the threshold of the third decade of our engagement. In keeping with our substantial achievements, the recent elevation of our ties to a strategic partnership and the rich potential of our cooperation, I feel it would be appropriate for me to take this opportunity to announce that India will soon set up a separate mission to the ASEAN in Jakarta with a full time resident ambassador," he added.

The secretariat for ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations), a ten-member block of countries including Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, is based in Jakarta.

"This will complement our Agreement on Goods and bolster our economic partnership," he said, while adding that initiatives have also been taken by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry ( FICCI) to revitalize the ASEAN-India Business Council and to set up an ASEAN-India Trade and Investment Centre.

Today's hottest temperatures will be coldest by 2047: Study

Posted on 05:43 by Unknown
Starting in about a decade,Kingston, Jamaica, will probably be off-the-charts hot _ permanently. Other places will soon follow. Singapore in 2028. Mexico City in 2031. Cairo in 2036. Phoenix and Honolulu in 2043.

And eventually the whole world in 2047.

For example, the world as a whole had its hottest year on record in 2005. The new study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, says that by the year 2047, every year that follows will probably be hotter than that record-setting scorcher.

The 2047 date for the whole world is based on continually increasing emissions of greenhouse gases from the burning of coal, oil and natural gases. If the world manages to reduce its emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases, that would be pushed to as late as 2069, according to Mora.

But for now, Mora said, the world is rushing toward the 2047 date.

``The first U.S. cities to feel that would be Honolulu and Phoenix, followed by San Diego and Orlando, Florida. in 2046. New York and Washington will get new climates around 2047, with Los Angeles, Detroit, Houston, Chicago, Seattle, Austin and Dallas a bit later.

Mora calculated that the last of the 265 cities to move into their new climate will be Anchorage, Alaska _ in 2071. There's a five-year margin of error on the estimates.

Australians are wealthiest people per capita

Posted on 05:35 by Unknown
Australians are the wealthiest people in the world per capita on a median basis, according to a report released on 8th October by Zurich-based bank Credit Suisse. The Credit Suisse 2013 Global Wealth Report shows that Australia's wealth is also more evenly distributed across the population, Xinhua reported.

The report also finds that Australian people have a well above-average reliance on real estate which forms 59 percent of gross household assets. That's second only to Norway.

According to the report, Australia's mean wealth per adult is just over $ 400,000 each, second only to Switzerland, and that there are 1.12 million people in Australia classed as US dollar millionaires, an increase of 38,000, although that number includes all net assets including housing and superannuation. The median wealth figure of Australia is $ 219,505 per person, the highest in the world. Median wealth is the midpoint between richest and poorest whereas the mean wealth is the average of all.

The fact that Australia tops the median number is a reflection of the fact that Australian wealth is more equally distributed than in some other countries such as Switzerland, said David McDonald, Credit Suisse Private Banking's chief investment strategist for Australia .

"The top 10 percent of Australians own 50 percent of the wealth, “he said, "which compares with the top 10 percent around the world owning an average of 86 percent and the top 10 percent in the US owning 74 percent." The report, compiled out of Europe, said that there are 1.76 million Australians who are in the top 1 percent of global wealth holders, accounting for 3.8 percent of that group despite Australia having only 0.4 percent of the world's adult population.
