The bollywood singing legend Padhma Bhushan Manna Dey (Prabodh Chandra Dey) passed away in Bangalore on 24th October, 2013. The 94 year old master was admitted to the ICU in a Bengaluru hospital on 8th June after a chest infection gave rise to other complications. On 9th June, 2013 there were reports of his death, but the doctors put the rumours to rest by confirming that he was still alive and his situation was stable but critical, as the infection had led to other complications. He was later discharged on 5th July. Born in 1919 on calcutta, he started as a music assistant in 1942. He got his first whiff of public appreciation with songs of Ramrajya. “Upar gagan vishal” in Mashaal (1950) marked the first major break through for him. For his contribution to arts, the legend was honoured with Padma Sri in 1971 and Padhma Bhushan in 2005 by the Government of India. He was also conferred with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2007 and twice awarded National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. He was conferred with in 1969 and 1971. He married Sulochana Kumaran from Kerala. They have two daughters Shuroma and Sumita. Sulochana died in Bengaluru on 18th January 2012, suffering from cancer. Manna Dey stayed in Kalyanagar, Bengaluru after spending more than fifty years in Mumbai. National Film Award:
